RUSTIC PAINTED DINING TABLE

This project started with a fond childhood memory of a painted dining table.  The client had just completed a new conservatory in the beautiful highlands and wanted a ‘drama’ piece to work with her dining chairs.  I went to visit her, and we decided to work up a design based on a curtain fabric she had in the adjoining room.  It was a real challenge to find a table at auction that was the right size, so she commissioned one from Glasgow Wood who specialise in making bespoke reclaimed wood tables.

The issue with reclaimed wood is that its imperfections are tricky to paint an intricate design on.  It took many coats of primer, sanding and filler to get it smooth enough for the design to work. I hand drew the elements, using the curtain fabric for the inspiration, then painted them in layers to get the movement and detail to work.
