VINTAGE DISPLAY CABINET

What to do with your brown furniture?  Your children don’t like it, and you feel that it’s overpowering in the room but can’t quite bear to part with it as it houses precious bits and bobs, is beautifully made and a great size.  The obvious answer is to invest in it and give it a new lease of life.  The client found an Arthouse Japanese Garden wallpaper she liked to line it, and we chose the colours and finish detail to work with both the paper and the existing decoration in the room.

Sanding back old furniture needs to be done cautiously.  The vanish needs to come off but details must be done by hand to preserve them.  Astragal glazing needs real care so as not to scratch the old glass.  The finish was achieved with a scumble glaze rubbed over a base coat of Craig & Rose Pipe Clay and a smidge of yellow on the carved details.  Finally, I copied the image of the swallows onto the central door to tie the design together.
